The 9th day of the 9th lunar month is the traditional Chongyang Festival, or Double Ninth Festival, is also called "Cornel Festival" and "Chrysanthemum Festival", which has a history of more than 1,700 years. It usually falls in October in the Gregorian calendar.

In an ancient and mysterious book Yi Jing (The Book of Changes), number "6" was thought to be of Yin character, meaning feminine or negative, while number "9" was thought to be Yang, meaning masculine or positive. So the number nine in both month and day creates "the Double Ninth Festival", or "Chongyang Festival".

In 1989, the Chinese government decided the Double Ninth Festival as Seniors' Day. The traditional culture of Double Ninth and that of the modern were finely combined. It becomes a festival of respecting for the old people, and loving, helping the old.

Double Ninth, Missing My Shandong Brothers——Wang Wei

As a lonely stranger in a foreign land,

At every holiday my homesickness increases.

Knowing that my brothers have reached the peak,

All but one is present at the planting of zhuyu.

To the Tune of Tsai Sang Tzu——Mao Zedong

Man ages all too easily, not Nature:

Year by year the Double Ninth returns.

On this Double Ninth,

The yellow blooms on the battlefield smell sweeter.

Each year the autumn wind blows fierce,

Unlike spring's splendour,

Yet surpassing spring's splendour,

See the endless expanse of frosty sky and water.

The Double Ninth Festival

The Double Ninth Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month. According to Chinese tradition, nine is a yang number. The ninth day of the ninth month has two yang numbers And chong in Chinese means double, so the Chinese name chongyang was created.

People usually eat chongyang cakes, climb mountains, drink chrysanthemum(菊花) wine or tea and wear dogwood(zhuyu) on this day. Dogwood and chrysanthemums are believed to have cleansing and protecting qualities.

It is said that, during the Eastern Han dynasty, a devil(酒鬼) lived in the Ru River, caused disease among the neighboring people. And the parents of a young man named Heng Jing died because of the devils magic. In order to save people from the devil, Heng Jing found an immortal(神山) to teach him the swordsmanship(剑术) to drive away the devil. Before long, on the morning of the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, Heng Jing and the villagers climbed the nearest mountain and defeated the devil with dogwood leaves and the chrysanthemum Wine.

Since then, climbing mountains and drinking chrysanthemum wine on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month have become popular.
